St. Lucie County Jail Overview

The St. Lucie County Jail sits at 900 N Rock Road in Fort Pierce. The Sheriff's Office runs it through the Department of Detention, part of the Corrections and Judicial Services Bureau. The jail holds adults only. That includes pretrial felony and misdemeanor detainees, county-sentenced inmates, and people held pending court action, release, or transfer. Youth and state prisoners are not part of this population and are not searched here.

The facility is accredited and inspected. The Sheriff states the jail is governed by the Florida Model Jail Standards and accredited by the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. It uses an Objective Jail Classification System, in place since 2005, to set security level and housing. So a person's housing code can change after intake as classification is applied.

St. Lucie County Jail Capacity and Population

The jail grew in stages to its current size. The Department of Detention opened in September 1987 with 508 inmates. Beds were added in 1990, 1993, and 2004. By 2004 the rated capacity was 794 against an average daily population of 1,184, which was well over capacity. Two new buildings finished in 2005 and raised bed space to a rated capacity of 1,370. Florida's March 2026 county detention report listed an average daily population of 1,213, near 88.5% of that bed count.

Use the 1,370 figure as the bed count reported in the Sheriff's accreditation assessment, not a fresh 2026 inspection. The 1,213 average is a monthly mean, so it is not a live count of who is in the building today. Most of that population was pretrial in the March 2026 report, with 670 felony pretrial and 116 misdemeanor pretrial detainees, which means many people held here were still awaiting court action rather than serving a sentence.

The jail and the Sheriff's headquarters are at separate addresses. Use the jail number for custody and visitation questions, and the medical family line for health concerns.

Visiting Someone at the St. Lucie County Jail

Visitation is by video and must be scheduled in advance. Appointments can be booked from one to fourteen days out, and no later than 11 p.m. for the next day. Each inmate gets two free hours per week, and after that or for remote visits the rate is 17 cents per minute, subject to change. Visitors show photo ID, arrive about 15 minutes early, and keep phones out of the visitation area. No minors are allowed in the visitation area at this time.

Mail, Phone, and Money at the St. Lucie County Jail

Personal mail and legal mail use two different addresses. Personal mail is digital, handled through Smart Communications, and goes to a post office box in Seminole, Florida. Legal mail still goes to the jail street address, where a deputy opens and copies it in front of the inmate. Phone service runs through Smart Communications, tablets are funded through GettingOut, and messaging is handled by SmartInmate.

Money deposited is receipted to the inmate's account, where it first covers the booking fee, then part goes to outstanding debt before the rest is available for canteen, as the table shows.

Booking and Intake at the St. Lucie County Jail

Booking starts when an arresting agency brings a person to the jail. The agency may be the Sheriff's Office, Port St. Lucie Police, Fort Pierce Police, or a state officer. Intake records identifying details and creates the inmate ID, logs the arresting agency, booking date and time, and housing, and lists booking offenses and bond when set. Classification then assigns security level and housing. A new booking can take a little time to appear on the roster, so a very recent arrest may not show right away.

The court side follows soon after. Under Florida procedure, a person not otherwise released is usually brought before a judge within about 24 hours for a first appearance, where bond and release conditions are set or reviewed. Booking offenses are intake entries and can differ from the charges a prosecutor later files.

About the St. Lucie County Jail

The jail has a deep accreditation and program record. The Sheriff's accreditation page reports long-running compliance, with the facility holding FCAC and NCCHC accreditation since 1998 and an Excelsior award from FCAC in 2014. The page also notes that Florida Model Jail Standards inspections have found 100% compliance since 2006, and that recent NCCHC and FCAC audits returned 100% compliance. So the facility's standards record is unusually consistent for a county jail.

A 2017 assessment described programs documented at the time. They included the Journey Forward addiction treatment program, run as a 90-day effort with the Public Defender's Office, along with Patient Care Navigator clinics, male and female therapeutic dorms, a programs dorm, and an In2Work retail-training pilot with Aramark. The same report listed contract services from Aramark for food, commissary, and banking, Corizon Health for medical and mental-health care, and GTL for phones and video visitation. Because those details come from 2017 material, treat them as documented historical examples rather than a guaranteed current list, and confirm any current vendor before relying on it.

Once sentenced to prison, an inmate transfers out of the county jail and is searched through the state system, such as the Fort Pierce Community Release Center for community-release custody.
